Defensive chemical sprays usually contain one of three active ingredients: CN or CS (tear gases), or OC (pepper). CN
is a lachrimatory agent, which causes severe tearing of the eyes. It
also produces tightness in the chest and a burning sensation on exposed
skin. CN is relatively easy to decontaminate, but it is not always
effective on pain-resistant subjects, and it has little or no
significant effect on animals. CS is an irritant that produces
heavy tearing, coughing, nausea, and involuntary closure of the eyes. CS
generally requires medical decontamination because it has been known to
cause burns to the eyes. CS is also not effective in aerosols due to
its low vapor pressure. OC is a natural, oily, resin-like
substance derived from hot peppers, the same kind used in spicy foods.
OC produces an almost immediate burning sensation of the skin and a
burning, tearing, and swelling of the eyes. When inhaled, OC causes
inflammation of the respiratory tract, resulting in swelling of the
mucous membranes. These inflammatory and swelling effects are
unavailable with CN and CS. In addition, the effects of OC are easy to
treat. Treatment is accomplished by simply flushing the exposed area
with large quantities of water. As soon as possible, the affected person
should be removed from the contaminated area, placed in a fresh-air
environment, and told to place their head briefly under water while
opening their eyes.
